Australian golf prodigy Jessica Bang, 18, is on life support in a Bangkok hospital after suffering a catastrophic brain hemorrhage earlier this month. Bang collapsed while preparing for an upcoming tournament in Thailand and underwent emergency brain surgery. She currently remains in intensive care.
Loved ones are attempting to repatriate the teen golfer back to Australia, but face significant medical and hospital expenses. A fundraiser established by Bang's cousins states that donations will contribute to her overwhelming medical bills and the cost of a specialized medical transport plane equipped with ICU facilities.
Born in South Korea, Bang became an Australian citizen upon turning 18. Her uncle, Jacob Kang, explained that her choice of Australian citizenship complicated her Korean residency and travel insurance, exacerbating the financial burden of her medical treatment. Bang, affectionately known as Rookie Bang, only turned professional in November and recently qualified for the WPGA/KLPGA rookie season.
Just three months into her professional career, Bang achieved a significant victory at the Ford NSW Regional Championship. In the final round, she carded an 8-under-par 65, setting a new course record. This win came in only her fifth professional tournament. Golf NSW had praised her potential at the time, calling her "something special."
