La Liga player Pablo Garcia departed his boyhood club, Real Betis, in tears on deadline day, a move necessitated by the league's strict financial rules.
Garcia, 20, who had been a consistent presence in Betis's first team this season, has signed with Racing Santander. His departure comes after 15 years with the Seville-based club, having joined their academy at the age of six. He progressed through the youth ranks to become a regular in the senior squad, appearing in 33 matches and scoring six goals, including a recent match-winner against Valencia.
The club's decision to sell Garcia was reportedly driven by a need to generate funds, potentially to facilitate the re-signing of Dani Ceballos. Ceballos, 30, a former Real Madrid and Arsenal player, had previously spent time at Betis before moving to Madrid.
Garcia was visibly emotional as he left the Betis stadium on Tuesday evening, waving to supporters with tears in his eyes. The club's choice to prioritize Ceballos, who signed a three-year deal, over the homegrown talent has drawn criticism from some football fans. Social media commentary expressed dismay, with one user calling the decision "Shameless!" and another suggesting blame should be directed at La Liga president Javier Tebas.
In a statement to Spanish media, Garcia acknowledged the difficulty of the situation. "It is a very difficult time for everyone, but we have to keep our heads up and look forward," he said. "I hope to return, that is what we all want. There were many things I could not influence. I wish everything had gone as we had all hoped. Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart to all Betis fans."
Garcia's father also spoke about the emotional toll, telling RadioCOPE, "This is really hard for us. If that is how Betis fans feel, imagine how we must feel. It was 15 years, a whole eternity."
While Garcia begins his new chapter with Racing Santander, Real Betis is scheduled to play Rayo Vallecano on Saturday. Ceballos, meanwhile, could potentially make his second debut for Betis against his former club, Real Madrid, this weekend.
