Tarik Skubal is entering free agency for the first time in his seven-year Major League Baseball career, and industry insiders predict his next contract could be record-breaking. ESPN MLB insider Buster Olney reported that multiple agents believe Skubal's deal might follow a structure similar to that of Kyle Tucker, potentially reaching a 'six times 60' — meaning six years at $60 million annually.
If this prediction holds true, it would represent a significant increase over the current record for a pitcher not named Shohei Ohtani. Zack Wheeler's three-year, $126 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, which pays him an annual salary of $42 million, is the current benchmark.
The Los Angeles Dodgers, who acquired Skubal during the trade deadline this season, are among the teams reportedly showing strong interest. Skubal made 10 starts for the Dodgers, posting a 5-2 record with a 2.61 earned run average and 70 strikeouts.
Olney noted that a contract structured like Tucker's would be a "record for pitchers by far." Tucker signed a four-year, $240 million deal with the Dodgers, which has seen adjusted payments with $33 million last season and $81 million this season. The Dodgers have expressed a commitment to sustained success over the next decade, suggesting they are prepared for significant financial commitments.
Beyond the Dodgers, the New York Mets are also considered a primary contender for Skubal's services. Other teams like the San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs have also expressed interest. According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, Skubal is aiming to finalize a deal before a potential MLB lockout scheduled to begin on December 1.
