Tadhg Furlong Cited for Alleged Groin Grab in Leinster vs. Munster Match
Ireland and Lions prop Tadhg Furlong faces a potential lengthy ban after being cited for an act of foul play involving an alleged groin grab of Munster’s Gavin Coombes.
Ireland and British and Irish Lions prop Tadhg Furlong has been cited for alleged foul play, facing a potential lengthy ban after an incident during Leinster's 24-18 victory over Munster. The alleged offense occurred in the first half of the United Rugby Championship (URC) match at Dublin's Aviva Stadium on Saturday.
Munster's Gavin Coombes informed referee Andrew Brace of the incident at the time, reporting that an opponent had grabbed his groin area. However, the television match official could not find sufficient video evidence to immediately penalize a Leinster player.
Initially, the allegation was made against an unnamed Leinster player. On Monday, the URC released a statement naming Furlong, 33, and citing him for an act contrary to good sportsmanship, specifically referencing the rule against grabbing, twisting, or squeezing the genitals. A disciplinary hearing date has not yet been set.
If found guilty, Furlong could miss a significant portion of the upcoming international schedule. This would likely include Ireland's home November Tests against Argentina, Fiji, and South Africa, as well as the finals weekend of the Nations Championship in London. Furlong is considered one of Ireland's most important players and a key figure for the Lions in past tours.
