Syracuse Coach Fran Brown Faces Scrutiny After Loss, Accusations of Cheating

Syracuse head football coach Fran Brown has drawn criticism and calls for his dismissal following his team's loss to rival Pittsburgh. The controversy stems from Brown's admitted accusation that officials were "cheating" the Orange during the game, as well as an incident where he appeared to "pump fake" a line judge.

During the 27-13 defeat, Syracuse, already the most penalized team in the country entering the game, received a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct after Brown's interaction with the line judge. Video footage shows Brown giving the official a head fake, an action described by an ESPN commentator as "unacceptable."

The penalty occurred moments before Pittsburgh scored a pivotal touchdown. Brown later acknowledged his outburst, stating, "I spoke out of tone, which I shouldn't have said. I just stated that, 'I feel like you're effing cheating us.' I said that. I said, You guys are effing cheating." He expressed regret for his language and for not maintaining composure as the "face of our football program."

Fans took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to voice their displeasure. Some expressed shock at the rapid decline of the team's performance under Brown, with one user suggesting that "a firing this year could be on the table." Another fan commented, "He may not last the season, especially after this video has gone viral."

Brown, who previously served as a defensive backs coach at Georgia, was recognized with the Paul 'Bear' Bryant Newcomer Coach of the Year award in 2024 after leading Syracuse to a 10-3 record and a Holiday Bowl victory. However, since that successful season, the Orange have struggled, posting a 4-11 record marred by injuries and quarterback inconsistency. Syracuse has not won a national championship in football since 1959 and has faced challenges since joining the ACC after a period of success in the Big East.
