Sydney Swans player Isaac Heeney was photographed with a young fan in the foyer of the team's hotel while coach Dean Cox was involved in a confrontation with several women over an alleged sexual assault.

The image emerged as Swans teammates Chad Warner, Riley Bice, Nick Blakey, James Jordon, and Heeney were suspended for the remainder of the 2026 AFL season. The club stated the players breached standards by staying out late, drinking, and bringing women back to the Pullman East Melbourne hotel early Monday morning. These club suspensions are separate from the police investigation into the alleged sexual assault at the hotel. No charges have been laid, and the players have denied any wrongdoing.

The mother who took the photo of her five-year-old daughter with Heeney described the incident as a negative experience for her children. She had taken her children to the hotel after Sydney's win against Essendon the previous night, hoping for a memorable holiday moment. Her children were excited to see players they admired, but the memory has since become tainted by the unfolding events.

"My family have supported the Swans for generations, we have been Swans fans through and through," the mother wrote in a letter to the club, detailing the confronting questions her children asked. "I am so incredibly angry and disappointed." She expressed distress that her daughter now questions her "idol" and her son has asked about the meaning of sexual assault. The photograph of Heeney and her daughter, initially a source of excitement, is now linked to a situation she wishes her children knew nothing about.

Swans captain Callum Mills addressed the situation, apologizing to the club's AFLW players, female staff, and women in the wider community. "We take these allegations extremely seriously, and we hope the women involved are getting all the support they deserve," Mills said. He added, "We really are disappointed at the actions of these five players, and as a playing group we fully support the club's decisions on the sanctions handed down. We take full responsibility, and we are deeply sorry."
