Scottish swimmer Katie Shanahan opted to pursue athletic achievement over a spot on the reality television show Love Island, a decision that culminated in her winning a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games. Shanahan secured the medal on Friday night and was visibly emotional following the race.

Inspired by watching Hannah Miley at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Shanahan expressed her hope that her own performance would serve as motivation for young swimmers. "I've always said that if I can inspire the next generation of athletes coming through, then my job has been done," Shanahan told BBC Scotland News. "I know after 2014 watching Hannah I felt inspired, and it would be nice to think that maybe there's some younger girls watching the 200m backstroke this time, and maybe they'll get into swimming from it."

She also commented on the outpouring of support she has received, particularly due to the Games being held on home soil. "I'm so grateful for the support, and with it being a home Games it feels like that support has been ramped up a bit, which is so nice to experience," she said, adding with a touch of humor that her main challenge since the win has been finding time to respond to congratulatory messages from friends and well-wishers.
