Katie Shanahan, a 22-year-old swimmer from Glasgow, opted for athletic achievement over potential reality television fame, declining an offer to compete on the UK show "Love Island" last year. Her decision proved fruitful when she won a silver medal in the 200m breaststroke at the Commonwealth Games.

Shanahan stated she is a dedicated fan of "Love Island" and was approached by producers, along with fellow swimmer Abbie Wood, to consider appearing on the show. However, she prioritized her swimming career, recognizing that participation would conflict with her training and competition schedule. Despite the choice, Shanahan indicated she might reconsider if a similar opportunity arose in the future, acknowledging the temptation of TV stardom.

"Love Island," which premiered in 2015, involves singles living in isolation and forming romantic connections in pursuit of love and fame. Producers have shown interest in featuring athletes, with boxers Jon McConnell and Kaci Rock having previously advanced through initial auditions for the show before deciding to focus on their sports.

Megan, whose silver medal performance has garnered significant attention, cited Scottish Commonwealth champion Hannah Miley's success at the 2014 Glasgow Games as a key inspiration. Shanahan expressed a desire for her own achievements to motivate the next generation of athletes, hoping her performance in the 200m backstroke might encourage young girls to take up swimming.

She also conveyed her gratitude for the outpouring of support following her win, noting that the home advantage of the Games amplified the sense of community backing. "I'm so grateful for the support, and with it being a home Games it feels like that support has been ramped up a bit, which is so nice to experience," Shanahan told BBC Scotland News.

In a separate achievement, Scottish weightlifter Angus Doig secured a bronze medal in the 88kg category. Doig expressed surprise at his podium finish, having initially believed he was too far behind the leading competitors. He had left the venue to celebrate with family and friends before rivals' performances opened a path for him to potentially medal, prompting him to race back for the medal ceremony.
