Katie Swan has advanced to the second round of Wimbledon, marking her as the first British singles player to do so this year. However, her compatriot Katie Boulter was eliminated in the opening round.
Boulter lost to 18-year-old Italian qualifier Tyra Caterina Grant with a score of 6-2, 6-4. This marks the first time since 2017 that Boulter has been defeated in the first round at Wimbledon. It was also her first Grand Slam singles match loss against a qualifier. The defeat comes just 18 days after Boulter achieved her biggest career win by ranking against world number two Elena Rybakina.
Grant, who was making her Grand Slam main-draw debut, had not previously competed in a singles match on grass at any level before this year's Wimbledon qualifying. She secured an early break in the first set and maintained momentum, ultimately winning without facing a single break point against Boulter. Grant served out the victory comfortably, dropping only three points across her final four service games.
Last year, 13 British players were eliminated in the first round of Wimbledon. The highest number of early exits for British players in the tournament's history is 16, recorded in 1988.
Several other British players are scheduled to compete on the second day of the tournament. Jack Pinnington Jones is set to complete his match against American 28th seed Brandon Nakashima, currently trailing two sets to one. Eastbourne semi-finalist Toby Samuel will face 15th seed Jakub Mensik, and British number two Jan Choinski is matched against Vit Kopriva. Additionally, Jacob Fearnley plays Alex Michelsen, Arthur Fery faces Damir Dzumhur, Billy Harris is up against 19th seed Karen Khachanov, and Harry Wendelken will compete against Valentin Royer.
