Sunderland Secures Dramatic Late Victory in Europa League Thriller
Regis Le Bris' side came from behind to win their first European away match in 53 years with a stoppage-time goal.
Sunderland secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Portuguese second division side Torreense in their Europa League fixture, with a stoppage-time goal marking their first European away win in 53 years.
Noah Sadiki scored the decisive goal in the dying minutes, prompting celebrations from the traveling supporters. The win came after summer signing Jules Ahoka had canceled out an early spectacular opener from Torreense defender Volnei Feltes.
The late winner was significantly influenced by the creativity of substitutes Enzo Le Fee and Granit Xhaka. Both players, who started on the bench, proved instrumental in breaking down Torreense's defense. Le Fee provided a dinked pass into the penalty area for Xhaka, who then flicked the ball to Sadiki for his first goal for the club.
"When Granit touched it I heard him scream shoot and I didn’t think twice," Sadiki said. "I just hoped it was going in and the keeper wouldn’t save it. I’m really happy. It was a beautiful moment."
Manager Regis Le Bris had made seven changes to the squad for the fixture, acknowledging Torreense as arguably their weakest Europa League opponent, with the Portuguese side currently sitting 15th in their domestic second tier. This decision allowed fringe players an opportunity, given Sunderland's current standing of four points in the Premier League with five matches remaining in the month.
Torreense, however, had demonstrated their capacity for upsets, having notably stunned Sporting Lisbon in last year's Portuguese Cup final to qualify for the Europa League.
Torreense's opening goal was a moment of unexpected brilliance. Volnei Feltes, positioned well inside his own half, embarked on a forward run, evaded challenges from Sunderland's Malick Fofana and Nilson Angulo, and curled a shot into the top corner. The goal is considered a contender for the competition's best this year.
Sunderland faced a patient Torreense defense, which largely dropped deep in the second half. Le Bris introduced key substitutes after Nilson Angulo's header was saved by goalkeeper Lucas Paes and the follow-up by Omar Alderete was missed.
The introduction of Xhaka, Le Fee, Reinildo, and Nordi Mukiele proved decisive. Mukiele's cross led to Ahoka's equalizing header, while Xhaka and Le Fee were central to Sadiki's winning goal.
"Winning this game just at the end is really special," Le Bris commented. "It’s important for the club and the fans – they were fantastic once again. We are growing and we need experiences and I think the team showed the belief until the end which is really important for us. We showed again we have this mindset."
In separate European action, Crystal Palace suffered a 3-2 defeat against Lyon. Palace's defense struggled, conceding early to Corentin Tolisso from a corner and later to Ernest Nuamah after a swift passing move. Despite a second-half comeback that saw goals from Yeremy Pino and Daichi Kamada, Lyon secured the win with a cheeky backheel flick from Pavel Sulc, with Chris Richards' late header for Palace being saved.
