Stewart Leads Liberty to Dominant Victory Over Toronto Tempo

Breanna Stewart delivered a commanding performance, scoring 27 points to lead the New York Liberty to a decisive 106-69 victory over the Toronto Tempo on Sunday. Stewart's offensive outburst in the third quarter was particularly impactful, as she netted 14 points in the frame and helped extend the Liberty's lead.

Following Stewart's stellar play, she and fellow starters Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones were substituted out with over two minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Liberty entered the fourth quarter with a 21-point advantage, enabling the team to close out the game with reserves, including developmental player Madison Scott, who made her season debut.

Stewart played a total of 22 minutes in the game, a strategic decision by coach Chris DeMarco given the team's demanding schedule. This marked Stewart's return after logging extensive minutes in a previous win and playing heavily in recent international play with USA Basketball in Berlin, where she led the team in minutes played during their World Cup campaign.

"We understand it’s playoff time, and these games matter," DeMarco stated before the game, emphasizing the need to monitor player workloads, especially for Stewart coming off international competition. "Some players will play a little bit more, but we have to monitor Stew coming out of Team USA and the World Cup and how she’s feeling, and everyone else."

The Liberty established an early rhythm, with their offense flowing effectively in the first quarter, registering eight assists on ten made baskets. However, the offense experienced a lull in the second quarter, during which an 8-1 run by the Tempo narrowed the Liberty's lead to four points. New York finished the second quarter strongly to secure an eight-point lead at halftime.

Ionescu, who has been managing a back injury, struggled with her shot, missing all seven attempts in the first half. Despite her scoring difficulties, she contributed significantly with nine assists. The Liberty are currently focused on securing favorable playoff positioning, with upcoming home games against the Atlanta Dream. A strong finish to the regular season could see New York secure as high as the fourth seed, granting them home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
