Stephen Fleming has been confirmed as the new head coach of the England Test team, with former captain Joe Root returning to lead the side. Fleming, 53, takes over the Test coaching role from fellow New Zealander Brendon McCullum, who will continue to manage England's white-ball teams.

Fleming's appointment follows the termination of his 18-year tenure with the Chennai Super Kings. He will begin his role with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) later this summer after taking time with his family in New Zealand. Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim head coach for the upcoming three-match Test series against Pakistan, which begins on August 19.

Root, 35, who recently deputized for the suspended Ben Stokes, will extend his record as England's most capped captain. His return to the role comes as England prepares to face Pakistan, with the first Test to be played at his home ground of Headingley.

"I’m incredibly excited to be joining England as Test coach. It’s one of the most prestigious coaching positions in world cricket and I am honoured to be appointed," Fleming stated. He expressed his eagerness to work with the players and build upon the foundations laid by McCullum and Stokes, emphasizing both immediate success and long-term team development. "There is a lot of young talent in and around the team and our aim is to help them fulfil their potential as world-class cricketers."

Fleming also highlighted his anticipation of working with Root. "I’m particularly looking forward to working with Joe Root as captain - a generational talent who has achieved so much already," he said. "There is still plenty more to come from him, and I’m excited to support him so he can enjoy and thrive in the role in what is a different context to his first stint."

Root, who holds the record for 27 Test wins as captain, welcomed the opportunity to lead England again. "The Test captaincy is a difficult but hugely rewarding job and, after enjoying a brief taste of it again working with Baz McCullum last month, I am excited to lead this next generation of players forward," Root said. "The opportunity to do that alongside Stephen is also a huge motivator. He has proved over a long period of time that he is an exceptional leader with a great knowledge of the game, and I am looking forward to working with him and helping to build a winning environment."

Fleming has no prior coaching experience in red-ball cricket. England's upcoming series against Pakistan marks the beginning of Root's second tenure as captain under Fleming's coaching.
