Veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs has asserted his claim as the NFL's premier No. 2 pass-catcher as he navigates the free agent market. With training camps set to begin this month, Diggs, entering his 12th season, expressed confidence in his abilities during a recent video on his personal channel.
"Everybody got a 1," Diggs stated. "Opportunities aside, people might say there’s seven real 1s. In my opinion, I can compete with anybody, but take those as your 1s. You can’t name a No. 2 better than me. There’s not a No. 2 on a team. Let’s presumably give people the credit and just say, ‘OK, you want to take the No. 1 spot away.’ Name your No. 2 receiver right now. Tell me how much he makes. My last question is: Is he better than me?"
Diggs spent his most recent season with the New England Patriots, recording 1,013 receiving yards on 85 receptions with four touchdowns. This marked his seventh 1,000-yard season, occurring in seven of the last eight NFL seasons. The Patriots released Diggs in March.
Diggs noted that his willingness to operate as a secondary option could indicate an openness to a pay cut to join a team aiming for a Super Bowl. However, no team has yet signed the receiver.
Last December, Diggs faced felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault charges stemming from a dispute with his private chef. A jury found him not guilty of the charges. Diggs' attorney stated after the verdict that "professional athletes have a target on their back." The NFL concluded its review of the matter, determining there was insufficient evidence to suspend Diggs under its personal conduct policy.
Potential landing spots for Diggs include the Los Angeles Chargers, New York Giants, and Kansas City Chiefs. A reunion with the Buffalo Bills and quarterback Josh Allen, with whom he built a strong rapport leading to four consecutive Pro Bowl selections from 2020-23, has also been suggested.
