St Johnstone Secure First Away Win of Season with Gritty Performance

St Johnstone claimed their first away victory of the season against Aberdeen at Pittodrie, demonstrating resilience and determination in a 1-0 win. The Perth side, playing with a makeshift defense, adopted a more steel-oriented approach to secure the three points, marking their first clean sheet of the campaign.

Striker Josh Fowler converted a penalty kick early in the match, which proved to be the decisive goal. The foul resulted from Fowler's shot hitting Jack Milne's arm, and after a VAR review, the penalty was awarded. Despite a relatively weak strike, Fowler successfully converted the spot-kick.

Aberdeen dominated possession and territory throughout the match but struggled to create clear-cut scoring opportunities. St Johnstone's defense, featuring full-backs Liam Smith and Matty Foulds in a back three alongside Dan Finlayson, effectively marshaled the home side's attacks. Aberdeen's manager, Stephen Robinson, acknowledged his team's lack of incisiveness in the final third, stating that possession alone does not win matches.

St Johnstone goalkeeper Toby Steward made several saves in the first half to deny Ayoub Mouloua and Kevin Nisbet. After the break, Connor Ronan sent a shot wide, and a late effort from substitute Tony Yogane lacked sufficient power.

The result lifts St Johnstone to fifth place in the league standings, while Aberdeen, who were jeered by their home support at full-time, remain in eighth place, just three points above the relegation zone. St Johnstone manager Simo Valakari praised his team's adaptability, highlighting their ability to win games in different ways, even when not controlling possession.

"What a shift our players put in," Valakari said. "I've been talking a lot about the need to control games. Yes, we would like to do it and we are at our best when we control the game with the ball. Today, it was not possible and we needed to control the game without the ball. That’s an art as well."

Robinson, meanwhile, expressed frustration with his team's decision-making in attacking situations. "The pitch can be better, but that's not the reason for today," he stated. "We need to be finishing teams off, making better decisions. What I see in training is that we have that quality. We've not been able to convert that."
