St. John’s demonstrated the effectiveness of its aggressive defensive press in their season-opening victory, overwhelming Iona with a 104-65 win at Madison Square Garden. The Red Storm's pressure defense proved disruptive from the outset, forcing 19 turnovers and converting them into 26 points.

Early in the game, Iona struggled not only to inbound the ball but also to advance it past halfcourt against St. John's defensive intensity. By halftime, the Gaels had already committed 15 turnovers. This relentless pressure has been a hallmark of the team's early performances, contributing to a strong start against Monmouth and their exhibition finale against Texas.

Head coach Rick Pitino noted that while the team still has much to learn regarding chemistry and fundamental skills, their length and athleticism are well-suited for an effective pressing style. Players like Quinn Ellis and Tounde Yessoufou were key contributors to the defensive effort, with each recording three steals. Yessoufou also led the team in scoring with 23 points, complemented by seven rebounds and two blocks. Ian Jackson contributed 17 points, including an early barrage of three-pointers, while Keyshawn Hall added 13 points. Ellis facilitated the offense with 11 assists, alongside seven points and five rebounds.

St. John's established a significant lead early, scoring 14 of the game's first 31 points and closing the first half on a 21-4 run to build a 31-point advantage by halftime. The team's offensive output included 13 made three-pointers, with Yessoufou contributing four of those.

Forward Babacar Sane did not play due to an ankle injury. Notable among the attendees was four-star forward recruit Godson Okokoh.
