Spanish World Cup-winning players Fabián Ruiz and Gavi were honored by their hometown of Los Palacios y Villafranca with a unique tradition: receiving their weight in tomatoes. The celebration, held at the town's city hall, was part of the ongoing revelry following Spain's victory over Argentina in the World Cup final.
Ruiz, who plays for Paris Saint-Germain, was presented with 84 kilograms (185 pounds) of tomatoes. Gavi, a Barcelona player, received 68 kilograms (150 pounds).
Los Palacios y Villafranca, located in the Andalusia region of southern Spain, is known for its agricultural production, particularly tomatoes. The town has a tradition of honoring its successful athletes with this produce.
Both players were also given banners featuring "Tomatito," the mascot of the 1982 World Cup, which Spain co-hosted. Spain is slated to co-host the 2030 World Cup along with Portugal and Morocco, with opening matches also taking place in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
This marks the second time Ruiz has received tomatoes for a major title, having previously been honored after winning the 2024 European Championship with Spain. It is the first such recognition for Gavi.
Jesus Navas, a former Spain international and member of the 2010 World Cup-winning squad, also hails from Los Palacios y Villafranca and has been part of similar tomato-bearing celebrations in the past.
