Spain has advanced to the World Cup semifinals after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Belgium, decided by a late error from Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens. Mikel Merino scored the winning goal in the closing minutes of the match, capitalizing on a spill from Lammens.

Spain's Unai Simon had maintained a clean sheet for a record 650 World Cup minutes leading up to this quarterfinal. However, Belgium broke through just before halftime with a header from Charles De Ketelaere, leveling the score after Spain's Fabian Ruiz had opened the scoring.

The match was affected by early injuries for Belgium, with captain Youri Tielemans sidelined before the game and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois forced off midway through the second half due to a thigh injury. Courtois was replaced by Lammens, who ultimately played a crucial role in Spain's victory.

Spain controlled possession for much of the game, setting up camp in Belgium's half. Despite their dominance, clear-cut chances were scarce until Ruiz scored in the first half. Belgium, however, responded with De Ketelaere's equalizer, their first shot on target of the match.

As the second half progressed and with extra time looming, the game opened up. Belgium had appeals for a penalty waved away after the ball struck Rodri's arm. Shortly after Courtois's departure, Lammens misjudged a shot from Pau Cubarsi, leading to Merino's decisive rebound goal.

This victory sends Spain to a semifinal clash against France, marking their first semifinal appearance since 2010. Belgium exits the tournament with two goalkeepers facing injury concerns.
