South Africa decisively defeated England with a seven-try performance in the opening match of the new Nations Championship at Ellis Park. The Springboks controlled the game from the outset, outpacing and outmuscling the visitors in a commanding 45-21 victory.

Despite both teams facing late lineup changes—England losing full-back George Furbank to appendicitis and South Africa withdrawing Eben Etzebeth and Siya Kolisi due to injuries—the hosts established dominance early. Prop Thomas du Toit opened the scoring within three minutes, followed quickly by tries from Cheslin Kolbe and Kurt-Lee Arendse, giving South Africa a 17-0 lead after just 12 minutes.

England managed to stem the flow of points and, aided by a yellow card for Arendse, clawed their way back into contention. Ellis Genge scored from a quick tap penalty, and George Martin added a try just before halftime, narrowing the deficit to three points with a converted score from Fin Smith.

However, South Africa quickly reasserted their authority in the second half. Scrum-half Grant Williams broke England's defense to set up Jesse Kriel for another try, extending the lead. Further scores from the Springboks, including a brace from Aphelele Fassi and a late try from Makazole Mapimpi, sealed the comprehensive victory. England's final try came from Fraser Dingwall.

The match marked the beginning of the Nations Championship, with South Africa showcasing their attacking prowess at their home ground. England, who had arrived in Johannesburg early to acclimatize, struggled to contain the Springboks' relentless pressure throughout the contest.
