Sophie Cunningham Trolls A'ja Wilson Over Fan Confrontation Ahead of WNBA Playoff Game
Indiana Fever's Cunningham posts cryptic TikTok referencing rival's heated exchange with a spectator during Game 2.
Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham has appeared to taunt Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson following an on-court confrontation with a fan during Game 2 of their WNBA playoff series. The simmering rivalry between the two teams has been further fueled by Cunningham's social media activity ahead of Thursday's decisive Game 3.
Cunningham posted a TikTok video on Wednesday, making a veiled reference to Wilson's interaction with a fan during the previous night's game. "Not trying to be dramatic at all, like seriously," Cunningham said in the video. "I was just here having my morning coffee and what a damn comeback year for the 'point.' Who would have ever thought? Just who would have ever thought?"
The commentary is widely interpreted as a jab at Wilson, who was seen in a heated exchange with a fan in the stands during the fourth quarter of Game 2. Footage shows Wilson approaching a fan who had allegedly made a comment and taken steps toward her, pointing her finger and speaking animatedly.
Wilson, the reigning MVP, received a technical foul for the incident but was not ejected. Teammates and security intervened to separate Wilson and the fan, who was later escorted from the arena. The Fever organization stated that arena security had addressed the situation with the fan and witnesses, determining no violation of the Fan Code of Conduct occurred, and considered the matter closed.
In her postgame press conference, Wilson described the fan's actions as "unacceptable." "I'm not going to get into the bulls***. I'm just trying to play my game," Wilson stated. "But if I'm just walking cause I just got the foul, I'm chilling, and I see a man come at me, taking steps towards me and pointing at me, I don't give a damn what you said, I don't give a damn how you said it, the tone - that is unacceptable."
Wilson added, "You should never step towards me and point at me. That there is unacceptable. And how he gets back in the game? Cause they said he didn't do anything. I apologize to my team because I got us a tech. But it's just certain things that I'm not going to allow anymore because it's just unacceptable. You don't know me at all to come step towards me and point towards me and say anything."
Cunningham's reference to a "comeback year for the 'point'" is believed to be a retort to Wilson's own pointed gesture towards a fan, and possibly a callback to Cunningham's own viral "point" celebration that drew contention in a past game.
The sixth-seeded Fever and the third-seeded Aces are set to face off in a pivotal Game 3 on Thursday, with the winner advancing to the WNBA semifinals. The tension between the two teams appears to be escalating beyond the court.
