Sonay Kartal Falls Short in Wuhan Open Final After Remarkable Comeback
British player Sonay Kartal lost to Maja Chwalinska in a three-set thriller at the Wuhan Open, concluding an impressive tournament that marks a significant return from injury.
Sonay Kartal’s bid for the biggest title of her career at the Wuhan Open concluded with a final-round defeat to Poland's Maja Chwalinska. Kartal, 24, was competing in only her third event since returning from a six-month back injury layoff, ultimately succumbing to a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 loss.
The match marked Kartal’s 10th competitive outing since her comeback, and she was aiming to become the first British woman to win a WTA 1,000 title since Johanna Konta in 2017. Entering the tournament ranked 170th, Kartal had navigated a strong field, overcoming several top-10 players and former major champions en route to the final.
However, Chwalinska, the French Open runner-up, proved a formidable opponent, pushing Kartal into a demanding contest. Kartal took the first set decisively and held a break advantage in the second, but Chwalinska managed to shift the momentum.
Despite some late nerves, Chwalinska secured the championship on her third match point when Kartal hit a forehand wide. The defeat capped an extraordinary week for Kartal, the results of which exceeded her own expectations.
Following her performance in Wuhan, Kartal is set to climb to 50th in the world rankings on Monday, nearing her career-high and achieving the British number one ranking for the first time.
