Sonay Kartal Continues Impressive Comeback With Wuhan Open Quarter-Final Berth

Britain's Sonay Kartal has reached the Wuhan Open quarter-finals, continuing her strong comeback from a prolonged absence due to injury. Kartal, 24, defeated former Wimbledon finalist Jasmine Paolini in a commanding 6-2, 6-0 victory, extending her recent performance run to five wins in her last seven matches since returning to competition.

Kartal had been sidelined for over six months with a stress fracture in her back, her first serious career injury. "Against someone as good as Jasmine is, I knew I had to be solid from the start and not let up. From my side, it was a pretty flawless performance," Kartal stated after her match.

This latest win follows a notable straight-sets victory against ninth seed Belinda Bencic in the previous round. Kartal had been in strong form earlier in the season, reaching the world's top 50 and securing wins over prominent players such as Madison Keys and Emma Navarro. Her progress was interrupted by the back injury, which proved more severe than initially anticipated, forcing her to retire from a match against Elena Rybakina and miss significant tournaments, including Wimbledon.

After a difficult recovery period, during which she described experiencing agony even with simple tasks like brushing her teeth, Kartal opted for a patient return. Using a protected injury ranking, she has carried momentum into the Wuhan Open. In this tournament, she has not dropped a set against Anhelina Kalinina, Belinda Bencic, and Jasmine Paolini. Kartal's consistent baseline play proved too much for Paolini, who committed a series of unforced errors.

Kartal is scheduled to face Elina Svitolina, a four-time Grand Slam semi-finalist, in the upcoming quarter-final match.
