Sky Sports issued multiple apologies after a player from Fleetwood Town, a League Two club, used X-rated language during a post-match interview following their unexpected victory over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup. The upset occurred after a 1-1 draw in regular time, with Fleetwood Town ultimately winning on penalties.
Jay Lynch, Fleetwood Town's goalkeeper, saved Bruno Guimaraes' penalty, securing the win for his team. He was later joined by Conor Haughey, who scored the decisive penalty kick, for an interview with Sky Sports reporter Juliette Ferrington.
When asked about his thoughts before taking the winning penalty, Haughey stated, "I don't know. Pick my spot, hit top corner and run like f***. It's just mental. The boys, I'm so proud of them. It just shows how good the team are." Ferrington immediately apologized for the language and repeated the apology at the conclusion of the interview. Upon returning to the studio, Sky Sports broadcast anchors also issued two further apologies for the player's comments.
Lynch spoke about the significance of the victory, crediting his teammates for their performance. "My voice has gone from organising the defence," he said. "The whole team throughout the game was magnificent. To beat the English champions - credit to these lads."
He also referenced Grimsby Town's victory over Manchester United in the previous year's competition. "We took heart from Grimsby beating Man Utd last year. We kind of compared it," Lynch explained. He added that the team anticipated difficult conditions due to the expected storm, believing it might favor them. "It's amazing for the club and the town. Honestly it means everything to everyone."
