Sirianni Takes Blame for Eagles' Loss to Jaguars
Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni accepts responsibility for a crucial late-game decision that led to the Jaguars' game-winning field goal.
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni has taken full responsibility for his team's Sunday loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, a decision he described as ultimately costing them the game. The critical moment occurred with the Eagles leading 17-16 and only eight seconds remaining.
Instead of kicking the ball into the end zone, the Eagles executed a short kickoff that the Jaguars returned 53 yards to the Eagles' 39-yard line. This set up a 57-yard field goal by Cam Little, which he converted as time expired, handing the Eagles their third loss of the season.
"I lost us that game and that's what I said to our guys," Sirianni stated in his post-game press conference. "What hurt there is that the guys fought so hard, and I don’t make the decision that I should make at the end of the game and I cost us that game, and I put that fully on me."
Sirianni acknowledged that he had reviewed similar game-ending situations, including a recent one involving the Dallas Cowboys, but still felt he made the wrong choice. "I watched a ton of those situations after that Dallas game and, again, just didn’t make the right decision in this particular case," he said.
The coach expressed that the decision and its outcome will weigh on him. "It’s just like you would feel if you missed a free throw at the end of the game, or if you had a drop," Sirianni said. "I’ve been in both of those places. And those ones stick with you, and that will stick with me for a long time. ... Yeah, that one will hurt for a long time."
While Sirianni accepted the blame, the article notes that the Eagles' kickoff coverage unit was also a factor, and veteran kicker Jake Elliott could have potentially opted to kick the ball into the end zone himself. The loss marks a difficult stretch for the Eagles, following a defeat to the Rams the previous week, potentially leading to a two-week slide and a three-game losing streak overall. Sirianni's comments about the loss sticking with him are described as potentially sending the wrong message to his team.
