Singer Forgets Lyrics to Canadian National Anthem, Faces Backlash

A Canadian singer performing the national anthem before a soccer match between Canada and Peru in Montreal encountered a significant mishap when she appeared to forget the lyrics to 'O Canada.' The incident, which occurred on Saturday, quickly gained viral attention on social media platforms.

During the live televised pre-game ceremony, the singer struggled to recall the words, singing off-key before eventually breaking into laughter. The stadium's public address system attempted to salvage the moment by playing the instrumental version of the anthem, but not before audible boos were heard from the crowd and broadcast on television.

The performance drew mixed reactions. Many viewers took to social media to express their disappointment and embarrassment. "A task that school children manage daily is too complex for her. What an embarrassment," one user commented. Another added, "She didn't just forget the words… that's not the melody." A particularly strong reaction came from a commenter who suggested, "She should get her passport and citizenship stripped. This is a MAJOR FAUX PAS!!! SHAME!"

However, some social media users defended the singer, pointing to the 2018 change to the anthem that made its lyrics gender-neutral. They suggested this alteration might have made the song more difficult to remember. "It can happen. Stress can be a big factor sometimes. At the end, the whole stadium started chanting the anthem, it was beautiful," one supporter noted.

On the field, the Canadian men's national soccer team secured a 2-0 victory over Peru, with Jacob Shaffelburg scoring both goals for the team managed by Jesse Marsch. The soccer match itself, however, was largely overshadowed by the pre-game anthem incident.
