Shane Lowry has ended his professional relationship with caddie Darren Reynolds after missing the cut at the recent U.S. Open held at Shinnecock Hills. Reynolds had been working with the Irish golfer since the beginning of 2023, but the partnership has concluded as Lowry aims for a change in his season.
For the upcoming Travelers Championship, Lowry will have Dermot Byrne, who previously caddied for him during the first decade of his career, step in on an interim basis. Lowry is currently searching for a permanent replacement.
The decision comes at a challenging point in Lowry's 2026 season. The 39-year-old, a winner of the 2019 Open Championship and three PGA Tour titles, has yet to secure a victory this year. His season record includes two top-10 finishes.
The missed cut at Shinnecock Hills marked another setback in a major championship for Lowry, whose best performance in the U.S. Open was a tie for second place at Oakmont in 2016. Byrne's temporary return offers Lowry an experienced and familiar presence as he navigates this period of transition.
While caddie changes are not uncommon in professional golf, the timing of this separation, immediately following one of the sport's premier events, is notable. Lowry has not yet announced who will permanently take over caddying duties.
