Serena Williams faced criticism from commentators and fans for not attending the mandatory post-match press conference after her first-round singles loss at Wimbledon. The 44-year-old tennis icon was defeated by Australia's Maya Joint in a three-set match on Centre Court.
Instead of engaging with the media, Williams issued a statement through the tournament, expressing her gratitude for being back at Wimbledon. "It was really great to be back at Wimbledon. I never expected to be here," the statement read. "The atmosphere was amazing. Walking out was amazing. I definitely relished it and missed it and enjoyed the moment more than anything."
However, this decision drew sharp reactions. Tennis commentator Pav Gill took to X, formerly Twitter, to voice his disapproval. "Rules are rules... unless you are Serena Williams," Gill posted. "I'm sorry but the arrogance of Serena is something else. '@Wimbledon' gave her a main draw singles and doubles wildcard worth almost £100,000 [$132,000] combined and she can't even do the mandatory post-match press conference? She's played Wimbledon!!"
Gill suggested that Williams' absence might stem from disappointment with her performance. "I think she's hurt by her performance and that's the real reason she's missed the post-match conference," he wrote.
Another commentator, Simon Cambers, also shared his views, stating, "Impressed at how hard @serenawilliams fought tonight. Not impressed that she refused to do her obligatory media conference. Having been given a wildcard by @Wimbledon, that's not on."
Many fans echoed these sentiments online. Some pointed out that by skipping the conference, Williams did not publicly congratulate her opponent, Maya Joint. "As pained as she was by her own performance it would have equally distressed her to give her opponent any credit," one user commented. Another remarked, "No one is surprised at her lack of grace and perfunctory, arm's-length handshake. She has always wanted everything on her terms."
Prior to the match, Harmony Tan, who famously defeated Williams in the first round of Wimbledon in 2022, claimed that Williams had blocked her on Instagram after their previous encounter. Tan posted on Instagram, "So 4 years ago after the handshake, she blocked me also on Instagram, btw," accompanied by laughing emojis. Tan did not qualify for the main draw at this year's tournament.
