Seattle Kraken's Jacob Melanson Out Indefinitely With Rare Chest Condition

Seattle Kraken forward Jacob Melanson has been sidelined indefinitely after being diagnosed with a rare combination of chest conditions. The team announced the diagnosis of an anterior mediastinum hematoma with vascular pseudo-aneurysm on October 11, ten days after Melanson sustained an 'upper body injury' during a game against the Calgary Flames.

An anterior mediastinum hematoma is a blood collection in the front of the chest cavity, situated between the sternum and the heart. A vascular pseudo-aneurysm occurs when there is a tear in an artery wall, leading to blood leaking into surrounding tissues. The team stated that Melanson will continue to be evaluated and monitored by their medical staff in Seattle throughout his recovery process, with a gradual progression planned for his return to hockey.

The exact cause of Melanson's injury is not clear, but the diagnoses suggest a possible punctured blood vessel. The Kraken organization expressed gratitude to the medical teams in Alberta who provided care for the player.

Head coach Lane Lambert commented on Melanson's status, stating that the player is recovering. "Upper body [injury] and the news is the news. We certainly miss him when he's not in the lineup," Lambert told reporters on Sunday. He also affirmed confidence in the team's medical staff, saying, "I think our team did a really good job and acted appropriately and promptly and, fortunately, he's ok."

Melanson, a native of Nova Scotia, was selected by the Kraken in the fifth round of the 2021 NHL Draft and made his league debut during the 2024-25 season. He is 23 years old.
