Seahawks Sign Joe Mixon Amidst Running Back Shortage
The veteran running back joins Seattle on a practice squad deal after missing the entire 2025 season due to injury, bringing a Pro Bowl resume and a history of off-field incidents.
The Seattle Seahawks have signed veteran running back Joe Mixon, according to multiple reports. The move comes as the Seahawks' backfield has been depleted by injuries and departures. Mixon, 30, will reportedly start on the practice squad as he works back into shape.
Mixon spent the 2025 season recovering from a severe foot injury. Prior to that, he had a Pro Bowl season in 2024 with the Houston Texans, rushing for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns in 14 games. This followed a 2023 season with the Texans where he also achieved a Pro Bowl selection after recording 1,000-yard campaigns.
His seven seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals included an AFC rushing title in 2018 and a Pro Bowl selection in 2021. He also played a role in the Bengals' Super Bowl LVI appearance.
Mixon's career has also been marked by off-field incidents. In 2014, he was suspended from the Oklahoma football team after a video showed him punching a female student. He later pleaded an Alford plea and was ordered to complete community service. Several NFL teams reportedly removed him from their draft boards before the Bengals selected him in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft. In 2023, he faced a misdemeanor aggravated-menacing charge stemming from a road-rage incident, but was found not guilty. Additionally, a lawsuit was settled in 2025 involving a shooting incident near his home where his sister's boyfriend was the alleged shooter.
The Seahawks' decision to sign Mixon comes after the loss of Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III in free agency and the placement of rookie Jadarian Price on injured reserve. Seattle is hoping Mixon can provide much-needed depth and experience to their running back room.
