Scottie Scheffler's remarkable streak of 78 consecutive made cuts in PGA Tour events came to an end Friday at the Scottish Open, marking the first time the world's top-ranked golfer has missed a cut in nearly four years. The sequence, which began at the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship, was the longest on the PGA Tour since Tiger Woods' record of 142 consecutive made cuts from 1998 to 2005.

Scheffler finished the tournament at even par, two shots outside the cut line, after shooting a 2-over 72 in the second round. He struggled with his putting throughout the day, missing a 6-foot par putt on the ninth hole and a 3 1/2-foot par putt on his second hole of the day, the 11th. A subsequent chip from high grass on the par-5 12th rolled into a bunker, leading to a second straight bogey.

"Got off to a poor start and after that, I didn't really it close enough to give myself a bunch of looks," Scheffler said of his performance. "That's how you shoot over par."

The missed cut comes just one week before Scheffler is set to defend his title at The Open Championship, the 154th playing of the event. He acknowledged the change in his immediate plans, stating, "A little different than I was planning. Figure out how I get down to Birkdale and go from there."

Scheffler will be making his debut at Birkdale, a links course, as he prepares for his title defense. The previous longest active streak of made cuts on the PGA Tour now belongs to Matt Fitzpatrick, who has made 29 in a row.
