Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay's heart surgery was a complete success, the club announced Tuesday. The 29-year-old underwent an ablation procedure at Spire Manchester Hospital to correct an irregular heart rhythm. He is expected to resume training this month.
McTominay was substituted during Napoli's 2-1 Serie A defeat by Como on August 30, after which a mild, benign arrhythmia was diagnosed. The club stated that McTominay will rest for two weeks before returning to training, with an anticipated return to action after the international break in early October.
McTominay posted on Instagram following the announcement, stating, "See you soon Napoli. I won't take long."
An arrhythmia is defined as a heart rhythm that is too fast, too slow, or irregular. The cardiac ablation procedure involves using heat or cold energy to create small scars in the heart tissue, blocking faulty electrical signals and restoring a normal heartbeat. McTominay's recovery is being closely watched, as he is also a key player for Scotland, whose head coach Sebastien Pocognoli has scheduled several matches for late September and early October.
