Scotland showcased significant depth in their Rugby Nations Championship opener, securing a dominant 47-38 victory against Argentina in Cordoba without the presence of star fly-half Finn Russell. The win suggests the team has developed resilience and capability beyond its primary playmaker.
Tom Jordan, playing at fly-half, and center Rory Hutchinson were instrumental in the victory. Jordan dovetailed effectively with his former Glasgow Warriors teammate, captain Sione Tuipulotu, in midfield. Hutchinson also performed with poise and composure, forming a strong partnership with Tuipulotu.
"I was definitely pleased with how it worked out with Hutch," said Tuipulotu. "He's a great communicator and I like to think that's a strength of my game as well. He's had an awesome season and I think it worked really well between the two of us. We worked hard in training and connected really well with each other."
Tuipulotu also praised Jordan: "Also a shout for Tom. I love playing with him. We know each other so well from playing together at Glasgow. I like to think our energy bounces off of each other quite nicely. I trust him a lot on the field."
Fergus Burke, who came off the bench, also contributed positively, helping to create several of Scotland's seven tries. The performance demonstrated that players on the fringes of the squad can step up and perform on a significant stage when given the opportunity.
This dominant win marks an emphatic start to Scotland's Nations Championship campaign. The victory was particularly satisfying given Scotland's previous struggles against Argentina, including a significant lead squandered in a November match at Murrayfield. The team acknowledged the past painful experience as a learning opportunity.
"This was always going to be a massive challenge for us considering how good Argentina are as a team and how passionate they are," Tuipulotu stated. "That's what I wanted us to do most of all - match their passion - and I think we did that. We also played some really good rugby at times as well."
Scotland's attack found a good rhythm, with tries scored by Tuipulotu, Pierre Schoeman, Hutchinson, Gregor Brown, Scott Cummings, Gregor Hiddleston, and Kyle Rowe. Notably, the tries for Schoeman and Cummings marked their 50th caps, while hooker Hiddleston scored on his debut. Had Scotland not conceded two late tries, the margin of victory would have been even larger.
The team has now traveled to South Africa to face the world champions. While acknowledging the significant step up in competition, Scotland takes encouragement from their performance against Argentina. Coach Gregor Townsend noted that despite the strong showing, there is still room for improvement.
"Next week will be a different challenge in terms of how South Africa defend. We know that will be another step up," Tuipulotu said. Scotland will need to raise their game further to challenge the Springboks, but their form suggests they are in a strong position as they prepare for their next match.
