Scotland Secures World Cup Play-off Victory Over Czech Republic
Scotland defeated the Czech Republic 3-2 in the second leg of their Women's World Cup play-off, advancing 5-2 on aggregate.
Scotland secured their place in the next round of the Women's World Cup play-offs with a 3-2 victory over the Czech Republic in Paisley, completing a 5-2 aggregate win. The Scots twice came from behind in the match, which marked the first time in decades that fans were permitted to consume alcohol during a Scotland match on home soil.
Despite holding a 2-0 lead from the first leg, Scotland conceded an early goal in the third minute when Czech full-back Denisa Vesela scored from 30 yards. Scotland quickly responded, with Lauren Davidson netting an equalizer just two minutes later. The visitors regained the lead in the 32nd minute when captain Klara Cahynova headed in a corner.
Following substitutions at halftime, Scotland took control of the second half. Kathleen McGovern capitalized on a defensive error in the 49th minute to level the score. The decisive goal came in the 72nd minute when Christy Grimshaw scored after a spill from the Czech goalkeeper.
Scotland will now face Sweden, who advanced with a dominant 15-0 aggregate victory over Lithuania. "What it [the win] showed is what Scotland's all about," said Scotland manager Melissa Andreatta. "We stuck to our principles, ground out a result and that puts us in a good place for what's ahead." Andreatta expressed confidence in her team's preparedness for the upcoming tie against Sweden, acknowledging the higher level of competition but asserting that Scotland will be ready.
"We had the options in our back pocket and we had to use them," Andreatta added. "These two games being so tough and testing us in all different ways gives us the confidence to go again against Sweden. It's a different level, they're number eight in the world but we'll be ready."
