Scotland Faces Key Selection Dilemmas Ahead of Nations League Clash

Scotland's new head coach Sebastien Pocognoli faces significant selection questions as his team prepares to face North Macedonia on Saturday, seeking their first win under his tenure. After a goalless draw and a home defeat where they played with 10 men against Switzerland, the upcoming Nations League match has become even more critical.

Goalkeeping Concerns

Angus Gunn, who started against Switzerland, admitted disappointment with the goals conceded. Pundits have criticized his performance, particularly on the first and third goals. Despite his struggles at his club, San Jose Earthquakes, where he has conceded 23 goals in 11 games, Pocognoli may stick with Gunn due to a lack of readily available alternatives. Other options like Scott Bain, Jon McCracken, and Liam Kelly have limited recent match action. However, Pocognoli has shown a willingness to make bold decisions, including awarding three debuts in his first two games, leaving the door open for a potential change in goal.

Defensive Stability

In defense, Pocognoli may have found more clarity. Substitute Stephen Welsh impressed on his debut against Switzerland, settling into the back three effectively. Despite being dropped for Luis Binks' debut, Welsh was restored after Jack Hendry's red card and performed admirably on the right side of defense. His vocal presence, versatility, and comfort in carrying the ball are seen as key assets fitting Pocognoli's style. With Hendry suspended, Welsh is likely to retain his starting spot.

Wing Options and Attacking Threats

The integration of winger Ben Gannon-Doak presents another puzzle. Despite impactful substitute appearances, he has yet to start. His pace and attacking threat are evident, leading some to believe he should be in the starting lineup. However, fitting him into a 3-4-1-2 formation, likely as a wing-back, raises questions about his defensive capabilities compared to established players like Aaron Hickey or Nathan Patterson. Pocognoli may need to show flexibility in his formation to best utilize Gannon-Doak's talents.

McGinn's Role and Striker Partnership

Captain John McGinn, despite winning fouls against Switzerland and showing improvement in the second half, has not yet reached the heights seen at his Premier League club, Aston Villa. Pocognoli needs more from the veteran midfielder as he approaches his 100th cap. McGinn's ability to create moments of magic makes him difficult to drop, but his current form is a concern. Meanwhile, the partnership between strikers Kieron Bowie and Oli McBurnie showed promise before Bowie was sacrificed early in the Switzerland match. McBurnie's work rate has been praised, and Pocognoli is facing the long-standing challenge of Scotland's goal drought, with the team 422 minutes without scoring. Giving Bowie another start alongside McBurnie could be a potential solution to break this scoring record.
