Scotland Boss Pocognoli Laments Early Red Card in Switzerland Defeat

Scotland manager Sebastien Pocognoli expressed frustration after his team's 3-0 Nations League defeat to Switzerland, citing Jack Hendry's early red card as a pivotal moment that derailed their strategy. The incident occurred just eight minutes into the match at Hampden when Hendry was sent off for a foul on Swiss attacker Dan Ndoye. The referee initially awarded a penalty but later changed the decision to a free-kick and a red card.
Switzerland capitalized on the man advantage, with Ricardo Rodriguez scoring from the ensuing free-kick. Nico Elvedi and Zeki Amdouni added second-half goals to secure the victory for the group's top seeds.
The loss leaves Scotland third in Group B1 with one point, trailing Switzerland by five points with six games remaining. Pocognoli acknowledged the challenging circumstances, stating that the game plan had to be abandoned after the red card. He noted the team's effort and attitude in trying to adapt to playing with 10 men.
"It was a frustrating night," Pocognoli said. "There’s not a lot to say about the game. We can analyse the game, 80 per cent with 10 men, red card, direct finish from the free kick, so probably the worst situation we could have."
Pocognoli highlighted the team's resilience and effort despite being a man down against a strong Swiss side. He expressed disappointment at not being able to deliver a better performance for the home crowd.
Despite the setback, Pocognoli saw elements of the performance that could offer optimism for the future, particularly the team's attitude and refusal to drop their heads.
Scotland is set to face North Macedonia next, where Pocognoli hopes to secure his first win as manager and boost the team's morale. He emphasized the importance of achieving a positive result in the upcoming match.
"It is important to have a result to give a boost to the staff, not only for me but all the people who work so hard. Also for the players," he stated. "We need a good performance in Macedonia and the result is important."
