Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has advocated for his former club to challenge Atletico Madrid's pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero. Despite previously criticizing the Argentine defender's style of play, Scholes suggested United should consider a move for the player, who is reportedly valued around £34 million.
Romero, 28, is expected to depart Spurs this summer, with Atletico Madrid reportedly in advanced negotiations. Manchester United, seeking to strengthen their squad for their Champions League campaign, are exploring transfer options.
Speaking on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast, Scholes described Romero as a 'nutcase' and an 'absolute clown' who 'does some stupid things.' However, he also expressed a belief in the defender's capabilities, stating, "I think if someone could get hold of him, like Michael Carrick, who is very calm and relaxed, he might be able to [help him]." Scholes sees Romero as a 'cult hero defender' who could appeal to Old Trafford fans.
Scholes pointed to Romero's winning pedigree, including a Europa League title with Spurs and multiple international honors with Argentina, as evidence of his quality. He also noted his relatively low transfer fee as a significant draw.
Manchester United's defensive options include Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Ayden Heaven, and Lisandro Martinez. Scholes highlighted the need for reinforcement in the center-back position, citing concerns about the reliability and injury record of some current players, to enable the club to compete at the highest level.
Manchester United's Premier League season is set to begin with an away match against newly promoted Hull City on August 22.
