Miami Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara became the franchise's all-time strikeout leader Tuesday night during the team's 6-4 victory over the Texas Rangers. The milestone, however, was met with an awkward silence from some fans and an ensuing vocal reaction from Marlins announcer Tommy Hutton.

Hutton expressed frustration that the crowd did not acknowledge the record before it was officially displayed on the scoreboard. "The problem I have, most of the fans here tonight should know that without having to look at the scoreboard," Hutton stated during the broadcast.

The Marlins' players themselves had to prompt the fans to applaud Alcantara's achievement. Hutton's broadcast partner, Kyle Sielaff, noted the visible displeasure from the Marlins' dugout, observing that "They are telling fans to stand up and applaud Sandy [Alcantara]." At one point, Hutton could be heard directing his remarks toward the fans, urging them to "appreciate it out there."

Alcantara, who joined the Marlins in 2018 via a trade with the Cardinals, achieved the record with his 1,002nd strikeout. Over 186 starts, he has accumulated 1,177 innings pitched and a 60-71 record.

"Very proud of myself, the way that I’ve been growing here, in this organization, and grateful for all the opportunities that this team gives to me, day by day," Alcantara said. "Tonight was a great night for me, for my family, my teammates, the city, everybody who watched the game."

This record adds to Alcantara's accolades, which include being the franchise's sole National League Cy Young Award winner in 2022. He also recently became the fifth Dominican-born pitcher to reach 1,000 career strikeouts.

Clayton McCullough, a Marlins representative, emphasized the significance of a franchise record. "A franchise record is a big deal," McCullough said. "It’s a tough thing to do. It takes longevity, it takes certainly to be really good to be able to stay in a place long enough and be able to have an accolade, a record like that."
