Sam LaPorta Expresses Frustration Over Contract Status with Lions
Detroit tight end Sam LaPorta voices disappointment with the team for not offering a contract extension, stating he's prepared to play elsewhere if necessary.
Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta has expressed his dissatisfaction with the team's lack of a contract extension, indicating he is prepared to explore opportunities with other NFL franchises if an agreement is not reached.
LaPorta, currently in the final year of his rookie contract, is set to become a free agent in March if a new deal is not finalized. The Pro Bowl tight end made his feelings known during an appearance on Barstool Sports' "Pardon My Take." He shared his disappointment, particularly given his contributions and the physical risks associated with playing in the NFL.
"I think the combination of getting your heartstrings twisted as well as the violent sport that we play, it sucks," LaPorta said. "And it’s disappointing that you go out there every week and you bear the risk of getting hurt. Like last year, whatever it was, Week 9, Week 10, I break my f---ing back for the team. And then I’m going out there this year, and I’m balling, and maybe they’re just not showing the love."
He added, "So, it sucks. I’m going to continue to be a pro, and I dish a lot of that to my agent, and he handles that great. … So, I’m going to continue to go do my thing and ball out. And in three months, if I don’t get to wear the Honolulu Blue and play for the Lions anymore, it’s going to be all good. I’ll go get paid somewhere else."
LaPorta has been a key contributor to the Lions' offense this season. Through five games, he has recorded 27 catches for 316 yards and three touchdowns, ranking fifth in the NFL among tight ends in receiving yards. He underwent a microdiscectomy procedure last November to address a herniated disc in his back. LaPorta suggested that his recovery and performance this season demonstrate that the injury should not be a concern for the team.
As a second-round draft pick, LaPorta was not eligible for a fifth-year option on his rookie contract. The Lions are preparing to face the Green Bay Packers on Sunday following their bye week.
