New Orleans Saints wide receiver Ja'Lynn Polk has retired from the National Football League at the age of 24, the team announced Sunday. Polk was placed on the reserve/retired list, concluding his career merely two years after being selected 37th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.

The unexpected decision comes as Polk had been participating in training camp and was anticipated to secure a role in the Saints' receiving rotation. Saints head coach Kellen Moore stated that Polk had been excused from practice on Friday and Sunday for "personal reasons" prior to his retirement. While injuries were a factor during his time with the New England Patriots, reports indicate they were not the primary driver of his retirement.

Polk's rookie season in New England was challenging, marked by inconsistency and ending with 12 receptions for 87 yards and two touchdowns in 15 games. Following a season-ending shoulder injury during the 2025 preseason, the Patriots traded Polk and a 2028 seventh-round pick to the Saints in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick last September.

New Orleans acquired Polk with the intention of supporting his rehabilitation and competing for a roster spot in 2026. Despite showcasing strong performance during OTAs, minicamp, and early training camp, Polk's abrupt retirement brings his NFL career to a close after just 15 regular-season games.

Polk's departure follows that of Arizona Cardinals tight end Travis Vokolek, who announced his retirement at 28 just over a week prior. Vokolek's career was ended by a severe neck injury sustained last October, which doctors advised him would necessitate medical retirement. In a social media post, Vokolek expressed gratitude for his NFL career and thanked his teammates, coaches, and the Cardinals' training staff.
