Saints' Tyler Shough Acknowledges Fan Frustration After Falcons Loss
Quarterback Tyler Shough stated that fans had every right to boo the team after a significant prime-time defeat on the 20th anniversary of the Saints' return to New Orleans.
New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough acknowledged the frustration of the home crowd following a 45-24 prime-time loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night. The game, which coincided with the 20th anniversary of the Saints' return to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, saw fans express their displeasure through boos.
"Fans understandably are upset," Shough said during his postgame press conference. "We had some opportunities that we didn’t take advantage of and you’re playing the Falcons and you lose like that? I mean, I’d boo, too. That sucks."
Shough expressed that the team understands the significance of the game to the fanbase and feels the disappointment of falling short. He added that the team needs the crowd's energy, particularly heading into a matchup against another strong opponent next week.
The Falcons established an early lead with two first-quarter touchdowns from running back Bijan Robinson, setting a tone that the Saints' offense and defense struggled to overcome. Shough described the team's performance as "embarrassing," particularly given the context of the game.
"It's extremely disappointing. It's embarrassing," Shough stated. "I mean, I can't say enough good things about the fans showing up, the entire process, what this game meant, and we fell short as a team to not get that win. So that was our mission. That was my message, and we didn't win, and it was a team loss."
He emphasized the need for improvement across all facets of the team, starting with a quicker offensive start against opposing offenses. The Saints' offense has averaged 26.3 points per game this season, tying them with the Seattle Seahawks for 10th in the NFL. However, the defense has struggled, allowing the most points in the league. This defensive performance has contributed to the team's 1-3 start to the season, a stark contrast to their 4-1 finish last year.
The Saints are scheduled to host the undefeated Minnesota Vikings on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
