Saints Hand Giants Week 6 Loss Amidst Offensive Woes
New Orleans overcomes early deficit and establishes run game to defeat New York 34-27.
The New York Giants fell to the New Orleans Saints 34-27 in Week 6, a defeat marked by the Giants' struggles to establish a consistent offensive rhythm, particularly in the running game.
Despite an early 10-0 lead, the Giants could not maintain momentum against a Saints team that had lost three consecutive games. The Saints, under pressure from owner Gayle Benson to show urgency, reversed their fortunes by effectively running the ball and stopping the Giants' ground attack.
The Giants' offensive strategy heavily favored passing, with 47 attempts between their two quarterbacks. A significant portion of these passes were directed towards receivers Malik Nabers and Isaiah Hartenstein, who accounted for 26 targets. However, this focus limited contributions from other receivers like Darnell Mooney and rookie Malachi Fields. Fields was targeted eight times but secured only two receptions for 19 yards, while Mooney had two targets and no catches.
This overreliance on a few playmakers allowed defenses to key in on them, as evidenced by Jameis Winston's two interceptions, both forced throws to Nabers and Hartenstein.
In the second quarter, running back Cam Skattebo, who had been demoted earlier due to fumbling issues, re-entered the game alongside fullback Patrick Ricard. With the ball on their own 17-yard line and facing a Saints run defense ranked 30th in the league, the opportunity seemed ripe to establish the run. Instead, Skattebo and Ricard appeared to be used as decoys, with Winston passing to Nabers for a 14-yard gain. Skattebo was then removed from the field, and the Giants did not run the ball on the subsequent three plays before punting. The Giants recorded only 13 rushing attempts in the first half, totaling a mere 31 yards.
The Saints, conversely, found success on the ground and in stopping the Giants' run. After erasing the early deficit, they secured their first win in four games. Following the victory, the Saints departed for Paris to prepare for their Week 7 matchup against the Steelers, marking a significant turnaround for the team.
