Sacramento Kings Owner Vivek Ranadivé Criticized for 'Alarming' Team Motivation Dinner

Sacramento Kings governor Vivek Ranadivé is facing criticism for an unconventional approach to motivating his team ahead of the NBA season. According to reporting by The Ringer's Zach Lowe, Ranadivé hosted a team dinner that devolved into a public critique of players, coaches, and executives.

Lowe described the event as a "roast of lots of people in the room, telling them all the ways in which they have been failing as players, coaches, executives, whatever." He noted that some attendees were "alarmed" by the tone, while others interpreted it as an attempt to use public perception as a motivational tool. Ranadivé reportedly framed his remarks not as his personal beliefs, but as a reflection of outside criticism that the team should work to overcome.

The Kings have struggled significantly since Ranadivé purchased the team in 2013. The franchise has posted a 436-610 record during his tenure and has reached the playoffs only once, losing in the first round in 2023. The team's performance declined in the following season, culminating in a 22-60 record last season.

In an effort to rebuild and inject new hope, the Kings selected Arkansas guard Darius Acuff Jr. with the seventh overall pick in the NBA Draft. This pick comes as the team prepares for another challenging campaign.
