Aryna Sabalenka has responded to backlash regarding her distinctive outfit at the US Open, asserting her indifference to public opinion. The reigning US Open champion, wearing a Nike ensemble featuring a sheer, jersey-style top over a bright orange sports bra and shorts during a mixed doubles match with Novak Djokovic, stated, “I love it.”

Sabalenka, who is ranked No. 1 in the WTA, explained that the basketball-inspired attire is Nike's tribute to New York City, the host of the Grand Slam. She noted that Nike's Grand Slam looks typically draw inspiration from the signature sport of the host country, citing surfing for the Australian Open, ballet for Roland Garros, and cricket for Wimbledon.

"Isn't it the perfect fit?" she asked, referring to the basketball theme in New York. Sabalenka emphasized her preference for the outfit because of its uniqueness and bold aesthetic. "Whatever people saying on internet, I heard they probably didn’t like it … it’s funny for me,” she commented.

This is not the first time Sabalenka has faced criticism for her on-court appearance. She also encountered negative reactions for her post-match dancing at the French Open. The Belarusian player suggested that criticism arises regardless of Nike's design choices, noting, “When Nike was pretty simple and standard, they were complaining. When Nike went really cool and fun and trying to get back, they always complain.”

Sabalenka first showcased the US Open kit on Instagram on July 30 before wearing it during her match on Tuesday. The outfit quickly divided fans online, with some questioning its suitability for the top-ranked player, while others defended it as a stylish and eye-catching design.

Sabalenka is set to begin her US Open title defense on Sunday against Camila Osorio of Colombia.
