Aryna Sabalenka, the world No. 1 tennis player, directly addressed a reporter's line of questioning that implied her focus had shifted from training to social activities ahead of her US Open matches. The exchange occurred in the media center following her second-round victory on Wednesday night.
Sabalenka expressed frustration when the reporter inquired about her feelings amidst the tournament, following a busy week leading into the final Grand Slam of the year. The reporter's question, which touched upon Sabalenka's social media posts featuring brand activities, prompted a sharp retort from the Belarusian player.
"You guys are, like, a joke. Parties, fun, like, why would you even say that?" Sabalenka asked, rolling her eyes. "Why would you even think about that? What kind of question is that? Just because I posted, like, some activities with brands, and you think that I’ve been partying, not training?"
The reporter attempted to clarify, suggesting to other media members that the intention was not to accuse Sabalenka of partying but to acknowledge the numerous brand events that high-profile players often attend. However, Sabalenka remained firm.
"Oh yeah, I wasn’t serious before that," Sabalenka responded sarcastically. "Next question. Think before you say stuff."
Despite the contentious exchange, Sabalenka has appeared in good form on court. She has shared three branded content posts on her Instagram account since arriving in New York. However, she has not dropped a set in her first two matches at the US Open. As the two-time defending champion, Sabalenka is seeking her third consecutive US Open title this month. Her performance coach, Jason Stacy, has previously discussed the specialized mental strength training designed to help Sabalenka manage pressure during high-stakes matches.
Sabalenka, who resides in Miami, Florida, has held the top spot in the WTA rankings since October 2024. She defeated Amanda Anisimova in straight sets in the 2025 US Open final and Jessica Pegula the year prior.
