Aryna Sabalenka, the No. 1 ranked player, sharply criticized a New York Times sportswriter on Wednesday after he questioned her about sponsorship obligations and pre-tournament activities following her dominant second-round victory at the US Open.

Following her 6-1, 6-1 win over Polina Iatcenko, Matthew Futterman of The Athletic, a New York Times-owned website, asked Sabalenka about her mood now that the tournament had begun, referencing "lots of parties and fun and stuff like that" the previous week. Sabalenka, a two-time reigning US Open champion, responded with irritation.

"You guys are like a joke," Sabalenka stated. "Parties? Fun? Why would you even say that? Why would you even think about that? Like, what kind of question is that? Just because I posted some activities with brands and you think that I've been partying?"

Futterman attempted to clarify, saying he was referring to numerous events and appearances, not suggesting she was unfocused. However, Sabalenka was not mollified, asserting, "You literally said that."

Futterman then addressed other reporters present, explaining, "For everyone who's unclear, I'm not suggesting that Aryna is having fun at these parties. I'm saying she makes a lot of appearances and there's a lot to do." Sabalenka responded with a simple "OK."

In a final attempt, Futterman asked if she found herself becoming "serious and combative" now that the tournament had started. Sabalenka retorted, "Oh yeah, I wasn't serious before that. Next question." She concluded by advising, "Think before you say stuff."

Sabalenka's on-court performance has also drawn attention for her choice of attire. She has sported Nike-designed outfits, including a black basketball-inspired ensemble during mixed doubles and a similar outfit in bright orange during her first-round singles match. The black ensemble for her second-round match featured a black sports bra and matching briefs, contrasting with the earlier orange outfit.

Sabalenka had previously addressed scrutiny over her outfits, stating, "Who cares what people think? I love it."

Her next match is against Kamilla Rakhimova in the third round on Friday. Sabalenka has faced criticism from some online commenters regarding her clothing choices throughout the tournament.
