Aryna Sabalenka, the reigning U.S. Open champion, responded to a reporter's question about managing her energy while juggling competition and social events, asserting that her off-court activities are integrated into her tennis schedule and provide her with energy.
The reporter questioned how Sabalenka maintains a steady level of energy over the two-week tournament, given the numerous events leading up to the U.S. Open and the demands of being the top seed in New York.
“What is the question there?” Sabalenka asked in response. When the reporter clarified, citing her busy schedule with events the week prior, Sabalenka countered, “Why do you think the week before I wasn’t focused on tennis?”
Sabalenka, who participated in events for Gucci, Material Good, and Moroccan Oil during the U.S. Open fan week, explained that these activities do not detract from her focus on tennis. She stated that her schedule is meticulously planned around her matches and that she carefully selects the brands and people she works with, ensuring they are comfortable and do not drain her energy. Instead, she finds these engagements enjoyable and energizing.
Some observers had previously criticized Sabalenka's social calendar following her exits in the Round of 16 in Toronto, Cincinnati, and Wimbledon leading up to the U.S. Open.
Following her 6-2, 6-4 first-round victory over Camila Osorio on Arthur Ashe Stadium, Sabalenka expressed her enthusiasm for returning to the venue. "New York I’ve missed you & your energy ❤️🔥 happy to be back in ashe," she posted. She also told the crowd, "I feel like this is one of my favorite stadiums. I really experienced the best emotions here in this stadium."
Sabalenka is scheduled to play Polina Iatcenko of Russia in the second round of the tournament.
