Russell Edges Verstappen in Photo Finish at Azerbaijan Grand Prix
Mercedes driver claims victory by one-tenth of a second, closing the gap in championship standings.
George Russell secured a dramatic victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, crossing the finish line a mere one-tenth of a second ahead of Max Verstappen. This win marks Russell's first triumph in three months and significantly narrows the points deficit to championship leader Kimi Antonelli.
Russell, who started from pole position, had built a substantial lead before safety car interventions reshaped the race. The first safety car was deployed following Alex Albon's collision with the wall, allowing drivers to pit for fresh tires. However, the race was red-flagged again shortly after a restart due to a multi-car incident involving Franco Colapinto, Pierre Gasly, and Lando Norris.
Despite the disruptions, Verstappen, who had recovered from a qualifying issue and started 16th, mounted a fierce challenge in the closing laps. Verstappen's Red Bull teammate Isack Hadjar finished third, with Charles Leclerc in fourth.
Championship leader Kimi Antonelli could only manage fifth place after crashing in qualifying and starting 16th. Antonelli was able to pass Lewis Hamilton, who finished sixth, to secure his position. Russell remains 66 points behind Antonelli, but the gap has narrowed from 81 points with eight races remaining in the season.
The close finish between Russell and Verstappen is one of the tightest in recent Formula 1 history, with both drivers on the same tire strategy in the final stages. Russell's victory in Baku ends a three-month winless streak for the Mercedes driver and injects renewed hope into his championship aspirations.
