Two professional Australian football leagues, the AFL and NRL, saw several players sustain severe injuries over the weekend.
In the NRL, South Sydney Rabbitohs player Dayne Jennings received approximately 35 stitches for a deep laceration to his right leg during the team's victory over the Newcastle Knights. The injury occurred while Jennings was attempting a tackle and landed on Newcastle's Dom Young. Footage indicated that the studs of Young's boot collided with Jennings' thigh, creating a long gash that extended from the outside of his thigh down past his knee.
Jennings' injury occurred amidst celebrations for the Rabbitohs, who were marking teammate Jai Arrow's birthday with a "world's biggest birthday party." Arrow had recently received a motor neurone disease diagnosis.
In the AFL, the Geelong Cats experienced a particularly difficult match against the GWS Giants, with three key players suffering significant injuries. Reigning Coleman Medallist Jeremy Cameron sustained an AC joint injury after a collision with GWS midfielder Clayton Oliver. Cameron was visibly in pain and required immediate medical attention, later confirmed to need surgery and an estimated four to six weeks of rehabilitation.
Teammates Tanner Bruhn and Jack Henry also suffered injuries requiring overnight hospital stays in Sydney. Both players have since been cleared of major damage and will be monitored by the club, with no immediate return timeline set. Bruhn posted on social media from a hospital bed alongside Cameron, who was pictured with his arm in a sling.
