Ross Chastain Questions Stephen A. Smith's Knowledge of NASCAR Drivers
The NASCAR driver pushed back against ESPN's Stephen A. Smith after the commentator stated that professional stock car racers are not athletes.
NASCAR driver Ross Chastain has responded to comments made by ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith, who suggested that NASCAR drivers are not athletes. Chastain, in a recent interview with OutKick, expressed doubt about Smith's familiarity with the sport and its participants.
"I don’t know that he knows a NASCAR driver if one walked in the room, if we didn’t have our fire suit on," Chastain said. He added, "If you don't know the people that you're giving an opinion on, I'm not sure that I can put much credit to it."
Smith's remarks, made in April on his SiriusXM show, stated that driving a car does not constitute athletic exertion. "You driving a car! I’m being honest. It’s a great sport. But come on, bro. Getting behind the wheel of a car is not the same. You can be behind the wheel of a car in your 60s and 70s, for crying out loud," Smith said.
Chastain acknowledged Smith's significant platform and reach, but reiterated that his opinion lacks credibility if he is unfamiliar with the individuals he is discussing. Kyle Larson and Jeff Gordon have also reportedly voiced similar sentiments regarding Smith's comments. Smith also extended his critique to golfers, stating they too are not athletes.
