Wayne Rooney, former captain of the England national football team, has voiced significant concerns about the team's prospects in the ongoing World Cup following a difficult victory against DR Congo. Thomas Tuchel's squad advanced to the round of 16 after securing a narrow win, with two late goals from Harry Kane proving decisive.

Rooney, speaking after the match, characterized England's performance as far from convincing, highlighting tactical weaknesses that he believes will be detrimental against stronger opponents. "For me, there are big concerns," Rooney stated. "We are all delighted England have gone through, but in particular, when England lose the ball, they are so open. Against a better team, I think we are in big trouble if we don't sort that out."

He elaborated on these issues, pointing to a lack of connection between the defense and midfield, and struggles with the positioning of the full-backs. "There are just no connections and big gaps in the middle of the pitch, and that is a big worry for me. He [Tuchel] really needs to look at that, otherwise we will go out."

Rooney also specifically criticized the performance of right-back Djed Spence, suggesting that the team's vulnerability in that position could be a critical issue. He revealed that, in his opinion, the team should have sought experienced reinforcement. "I think the minute Tino Livramento got injured, they should have been straight on the phone to Kyle Walker," Rooney commented. "Kyle’s still more than good enough and more than capable of playing in this England team. I would have been on the phone to him and saying, ‘Listen, we need you here so can you come out and help us’, because that could really cost us. I’m worried on that."

Despite his strong criticisms of the team's overall structure and defensive frailties, Rooney lauded captain Harry Kane for his crucial contributions. Kane's two goals secured England's passage to the next round, bringing his World Cup tally to 13 goals. "His header was brilliant, but the second goal was incredible, and he is just such a top player," Rooney said. "All the best players in the world are performing at this World Cup, he is England's superstar, he is the hero for us."

Rooney concluded that while Kane's performance was exceptional, the team must urgently address the midfield and defensive issues to improve their chances in the tournament. "There are few things that they need to clear up: I wasn't too sure about midfield and defence in that performance, but the main thing in football is you get through, and Harry Kane has done it again for us."

England is scheduled to face co-hosts Mexico in Mexico City in the round of 16. Mexico has maintained a clean sheet throughout the tournament and has won all of its matches. A potential quarter-final match against Brazil and a semi-final against defending champions Argentina could lie ahead if England progresses.
