In a season that has presented numerous challenges for the New York Mets, the emergence of rookies Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing has provided a significant bright spot. Both players, who were selected in the 2024 MLB draft, are off to fast starts in their rookie campaigns and are seen as key pieces for the team's future.
Benge, a first-round pick out of a Big 12 college, is drawing comparisons to other recent high draft picks who have signed lucrative contract extensions. While J.J. Wetherholt of the St. Louis Cardinals, also a first-round Big 12 selection, recently signed an eight-year, $112.5 million deal, Benge remains on his rookie contract. Benge, 23, laughed when asked if Wetherholt's deal was on his mind, stating that his focus is on his immediate performance. "I just want to go out there and play every day, which is what I’m doing," Benge said. "I’m just happy to be on the field and whichever way it goes down with the future, I’m gonna go out there, play my hardest and have fun."
Benge, a right fielder, has shown impact potential with his arm and athleticism, particularly after a brief adjustment period following his Opening Day debut. He entered Saturday with a higher WAR according to FanGraphs than many other highly drafted rookies from the 2024 class.
A.J. Ewing, 21, has settled into the leadoff spot and center field for the Mets. The team anticipates him remaining in that role long-term, despite his versatility to play second base. Ewing and Benge, alongside pitcher Nolan McLean, are viewed as important future assets, though no lengthy contract extensions are imminent for any of them.
Benge expressed confidence in the young duo, stating, "I feel like we both come in every day ready to work, ready to play and ready to play the game the right way. I feel like if me and A.J. are here together for a long time, we’re gonna bring a lot of wins here."
As the Mets approach the August 3 trade deadline, the team is expected to explore trading veteran players. However, the development of Benge and Ewing highlights a focus on the future amidst the current season's difficulties. The emergence of these young players offers a positive outlook for the franchise, even as the team navigates a period of transition and potential roster changes.
